What Do I Actually Put on My Resume?
Jan 06, 2024Let me answer this question with a question.
What is your career story and where are you applying? Context is everything.
I've been at this resume magic for years. I've helped nearly 300 clients transform their resume and finally go for the role or promotion they wanted but didn't feel was possible. I'm sure someone out there would sell you a template they say fits everyone. They are lying.
Think about it this way. Let's say you're a nurse. A potential employer will want to know about your current certifications. You'll need a section for that.
Maybe you're an IT professional or you use a lot of software that potential new jobs require you to know. You need to give your proficiencies a place to shine with a "Software" or "Technical Proficiencies" section. Here's one example:
Are you involved in your community in a way that relates to your field? Definitely include an "Engagement" or "Involvement" section. Something like this:
While there is a lot of nuance in these kind of sections, here are the CORE things to include, regardless of role or industry.
-
An attractive header where your name stands out. Don't forget your phone and email address.
-
Short Profile paragraph
-
Your work experience
-
Education and/or Training
-
A skills list
Should it go in that exact order? It can. But, think about what you're trying to emphasize for the job you want. If your degree is more relevant to that potential employer than your experience, put Education right below your Profile and above Work Experience. If you need to showcase important Skills, put that section above your Work Experience.
It really boils down to those 5 basics + whatever "extras" allow you to tell key points in your career story. Make sure the way you organize them brings the main things into focus.
If you're thinking, "Okay, Brittany. You've given me what to include. But, I have some things on my resume right now that you didn't mention once in this article."
