Student Success: Aimee's Journey from Panic to the Perfect Role

Jan 13, 2024

This is Aimee, and her awesome kiddos. She's an incredible single mom, a former educator and recently found herself at a little bit of a career crossroads. Her first job she had taken after leaving the education field was ending unexpectedly.

"When I found out that my current position was ending, I panicked over many things including my 15 year old resume. I'd 'fallen' into my few last jobs while home with my kids so starting from scratch and needing a job was scary!"

Maybe you can relate to how Aimee felt. You're on the precipice of big change, whether it's happening to you or you've chosen to get out of your current situation. But, how do you find a new role? How do you market yourself?

Thankfully, someone recommended my business to Aimee right at the exact time that I launched my online class, Resume Roadmap. She chose to add on the video resume review so that she could feel totally confident that my eyes had been on her new resume and that she'd be ready to embark on this job search.

And, wow, am I so glad she went that route. It meant that I had the total joy of finding out how the story ended.

After she finished the class, she sent me wonderful feedback on the class before sharing her resume with me:

"The Resume Roadmap course has been really helpful - the videos are easy to follow and engaging, you give us just the right amount of information, and you anticipate questions and provide helpful tips with the answers. The worksheets are invaluable because they give you a starting point and reference guide."

She was ready for my video review and was mainly concerned about the length of her resume. She had two similar versions, each tailored toward what kind of role she would be applying to.

When I opened them up, I was SO pleased to see the great work she had done with the knowledge and tools she had gotten within Resume Roadmap. I knew the value she was bringing to the table. It was crisp and appealing. Exactly how I would've done it myself!

I gave her some tips on how to shorten sections of her employment history based on which job she would be applying for and then sent her the recording of my review. I hadn't heard back from her until earlier this week when I surprisingly ended up with tears filling my eyes in my minivan in a parking lot. (I am a crier...sorry... #notsorry)

Here's what her email said:

"Hi Brittany-

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you but I've been swamped at my NEW JOB! Thank you so much for everything- your course is awesome and having you take the time to personally help me made all the difference. To see your work in action, check out the announcement on May 26 from my company- https://www.facebook.com/evokengagexperts

Thanks again!
Aimee"

Yep, tears. I excitedly clicked to see what job she had gotten. Here's what they had to say about Aimee in her hiring announcement:

The reason I exploded with all the happy emotions was that not only did Aimee find a job with her new resume, it wasn't just "any job."

She had such unique experience in both education and wearing many hats in a church ministry role. She may have even felt like she didn't have the "strongest" experience to apply for a role in marketing and communications.

Ah, and this is where I get even more excited. Her interesting and diverse work history was the REASON she stood out for this job. It gave her the edge because she could put herself in her new clients' shoes! How amazing is that?

Nothing in her career story was wasted. It all brought VALUE to this company. I asked Aimee if I could share her story and if she had any words of wisdom for other women who might be feeling like she felt at the beginning of this journey toward a new job. Here's what she told me (it's so good!):

"I encourage women to be picky and not settle since we're often our own biggest roadblocks! Do the work in the course; follow the steps and use the cheat sheets. If you get stuck, move to the next module! You can go back with fresh eyes and revisit what you struggled with later. Also, rethink your understanding of what a resume is. Resumes are fluid - it's no longer a sacred document printed on thick paper that you can't change. You can tailor your resume to a specific job with just a little bit of work!"

I couldn't have said it better myself. The right opportunity for your life, exactly where you are right now, is out there. And, not only that, they are waiting for you to fill that role. You're someone's perfect candidate. Even when it feels like you don't have enough experience or the exact right experience or the most logical career journey, don't believe that lie.

It would be my honor to partner with you in your journey to creating a resume that makes you stand out and tells your powerful career story, just like Aimee! It's all inside Resume Roadmap. If you want to chat with me about your situation, I would love to hear from you. Send me an email at [email protected].
